NIMS designates Fellows in recognition of outstanding NIMS researchers as well as individuals from outside the organization for their exceptional knowledge, experience and research achievements in materials science. These Fellows play a key role in NIMS’ specialized fields of research by leading and advising other researchers, with the aim of promoting our research activities.

Received doctoral degree in metallurgy and materials science from The University of Tokyo (1977). Appointed as Research Associate (1977), Lecturer (1982), Associate Professor (1984), and promoted to full Professor (1989) at the Department of metallurgy and materials science, Faculty of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. He became a NIMS Fellow in January 2012. He is a member of the Science Council of Japan.
