A new system of 3 research divisions divided by specialization and fluid assignment of staff

Under its 3rd Mid-Term Program, NIMS reorganized its existing research system into 3 research divisions to respond to the challenge of creating a sustainable society. In the new system, the respective divisions are organized by field of specialization, while the researchers who belong to each division are able to participate in various research projects beyond the barriers between divisions.

Researchers from many fields can take on the challenge of a single research topic

Feature of the Research System under the 3rd Mid-Term Program

Under the 2nd Mid-Term Program, research was carried out by a "one-to-one" system, in which one research center was responsible for one research project (project funded by the Operating Subsidy). This system had the merit of enabling concentrated work on the specified project by the center as a whole. However, in recent years, it has frequently been necessary to promote research cooperatively, by a fusion of the capabilities of diverse fields, in order to solve a single research problem.

Therefore, under its 3rd Mid-Term Plan, NIMS will take on the challenges of research contributing to solving global-scale problems with its total strength, by achieving further advances in the nanotechnologies and generic/infrastructural technologies which it has developed to date and applying those advanced technologies, based on a "one-to-many" system, thereby addressing individual research topics with a fusion of the capabilities of diverse fields.
